Blinded by Colour! [Toronto Baby Photographer]

I had the pleasure of photographing Baby S (or perhaps at 1 he's a toddler??) earlier this month. I am showcasing here some photographs that mom and dad want to see in {gasp!} colour. I will maintain that when it comes to studio portraiture, I will always prefer black and white. But for natural light portraits, sometimes it can be a toss up (though admittedly, I still can't help favouring black and white!). So as promised, here are the portraits in colour as per your request! I am curious to hear what you think.

Birthday Girl: {Toronto Children Photographer}

I just wanted to share some photographs that I took of H yesterday, while attending her birthday party. I did not partake in the games (except for the tug of war), though my two boys had a blast! So thank you mom and dad for the invite!

I left these photographs in colour for a change of pace, plus I am loving the fresh look! The colour of the grass is so saturated and creates such a beautiful backdrop.

Here she is playing tug-of-war. She gets to be at the end as an anchor because it's her birthday! We also had a game of kids between grown-ups - I think I may have gotten rope burn, lol!

Finally, here is just a little panel I put together for H - happy birthday!!
Featured Session: Little K and Family!

I photographed this little guy when he was around 6 months, and look at him now. He is ALL BOY, and he looks pretty much just like dad. So much for blond hair and blue eyes being recessive genes! Definitely not the case here. Little K is also expecting a sibling early July, and mom looks absolutely stunning. Here is a large showcase of favourites:

Featured Newborn: Baby A

I am not the most organized person - I will openly admit to that. Those who know me will certainly attest to that. I am far from perfect, despite being a perfectionist. There isn't a single day that goes by where I don't give myself a little talking-to about how I could have done so and so just a little bit better. However, I do pride myself on one thing - when I make portraits, I do it from my heart. To me, that is the only way I can do what I do and love what I do.

Before I begin photographing a client, I always spend at least 5 minutes letting go - I want to start all my sessions with a blank canvas and without any pre-conceived notions. Once the session begins, my mission is to create my most heartfelt photographic artwork. I let my heart and soul take over, and I trust that by doing so, the end result will always be satisfying and successful.

The photographs that I present here today are a few of my favourites from my wonderful photographic session with newborn A (9 days old!) and his lovely family. These six portraits speak to my heart directly, and is yet another testament that good things come about when I pour my heart and soul into my work. I love these portraits, and I hope you do too.

My Brand-Spanking New STUDIO!

The designers who designed this blog seemed quite horrified to see that my last entry to my blog was in February. I have good intentions - honest! I love my blog site - I love how it looks and how it functions. The only thing I don't love about it is that it won't automatically think of topics and write on its own. LOL.

The problem with me is that I think a lot and talk a lot, and I find writing to be way behind my thoughts. Like today's post. I've purchased a studio space since October. Granted, it needed a LOT of work, and I mean a lot. Construction began almost immediately, and continued well into February before it was ready. I had to contain my excitement because a part of me was quite nervous about this venture - nervous but thrilled at the same time.

I purchased a bungalow and converted it into a studio by knocking down most of the walls within and raising the ceiling height. The bungalow originally had 8 feet ceilings, which would have been extremely restrictive given my massive soft boxes and studio lighting equipment. Not to mention that I would feel that something was on top of my head as I am used to higher ceilings at my home. The contractors removed the original ceiling and somehow managed to raise it to 10 feet, cathedral style. We had to re-shingle as the old shingles were falling apart. Of course, we had to repaint the interior walls as well. Another huge but important investment was for the audio/visual equipment. I used a fantastic company called sparkAV (www.sparkav.com), and they put in a state-of-the-art A/V system. With this system, there are speakers through the studio, a Blu-Ray player, a ceiling-mounted projector, and a beautiful screen situated right above the fireplace. The whole idea is that when, you, my esteemed client, comes back for your ordering/viewing appointment that your photographs will be displayed via the projector onto the movie-like screen, whilst music is playing in the background. It will be like watching the best movie you've ever seen - a story about your family. I believe that this will take the "client experience" to a whole new level!

I've been shooting in my new studio since the latter weeks of March, though the studio is not yet completely finished. The walls are still empty as I attempt to find the perfect photographs to adorn them. The outside of the studio needs a lot of landscaping, which will begin next week. The landscaper has been hired, so it is a matter of getting things planted (I am no good with planting at all!!). There are little things that are needed - a coffee table, more studio samples, etc. It is still a work in progress! I keep wanting it to be "perfect" before I unveil the studio, but I know so many have been asking about it and wanting to see photographs.

So yesterday, I took a few minutes to take some snapshots of what the studio looks like for now. As the outside gets landscaped and as the walls get updated with my art work, I will update my blog with more photographs. Speaking of wall art, I am excited to be offering a few new and exquisite frames. I have four pieces of art that are currently being framed in these said frames - they will knock your socks off!

Viewing area:

Shooting area - I can use either studio lights or the natural light (north light!):

Gallery:

Happy New Year - Newborn Baby E!

If I was any good at writing blogs I would have logged at least a few entries within the last few weeks - wishing everyone happy holidays, happy new year... It is embarrassing to admit how many journals and personal blogs I have started and just left hanging. At one point I think I owned 5 domain names - all for the purpose of keeping various personal blogs of some sort. I have even made it a resolution one year to keep a diary! I have so much going on in my head that it does make sense to write some of my thoughts down, but what I found was that I always thought way more (and way faster) than I could write or type, and ultimately, I don't get a fraction of what I want to say written down. I would be writing all day and getting nothing else accomplished if I wanted my thoughts recorded! I guess I just wasn't good at paraphrasing my thoughts.

Speaking of paraphrasing, I want to showcase here the first newborn at my studio for 2010: little newborn baby E! Her big sister A now has someone she can boss around!

Well done, C and R! As always, it was a pleasure to see you. I will be posting your maternity set within the next few days as well (yes, order is reversed, I apologize!). The banana cream pie recipe will also be coming your way shortly!

I hope you love these as much as I do!

Soon-to-be Mom: Toronto Maternity Photographer

So I've been neglecting my blog this past week or so, but it is always a little nuts this time of the year. It really is not because any of you are any less important! I try to feature all of my sessions here but it is sometimes so hard to get them all in, especially around the holiday season. I am doing my best to catch up!

Here is a mom and dad who are expecting their first baby (how exciting!) in early January. I think I can pretty safely say that she is one of the fittest moms I've ever photographed (you know it C!). She can run circles around me, and as most of you know, I am not exactly a slacker when it comes to working out!! One thing for sure, they will have no trouble keeping up with their little baby! Congratulations again C and T!

Newborn Baby E: Toronto Newborn Photographer

Baby E is special - of course, all of my clients' babies are special, but baby E is especially special. You see, I like Baby E's mom and dad a lot. The minute I met L and N for their pre-session consultation, I just knew. I was only hoping that the feeling was mutual.

After they left from baby E's session, I once again reflected on how it is people like L and N that make my work feel so much like fun. Clients like L and N carry me through the tough times of running a business. Yes, I absolutely love what I do - I love making art for my clients, where the subjects are so near and dear to their hearts. However, the flip side is all the business "stuff" that I have to deal with, the unglamorous side of my work if you will.

So L and N, thank you for being who you are, and for allowing me to be a part of your lives. You know I speak from the heart when I tell you how special you guys are to me. In the meantime, I wanted to post a few of my favourites from E's session.

And here, looking very serious and pensive:

This father-to-be called me and told me he'd like to look into getting his wife, as a surprise, maternity and newborn portrait sessions. What a guy!
Little C is now over 2! [Toronto Family Photographer]

I photographed this little guy when he was around 9 months old, and I recall him as being happy, extremely smiley and generally an all-round good natured baby. Now, about a year and a half later, he is no different. Not only is C an endearing little boy, I was also quite mesmerized by the dynamics of this family - so openly affectionate, loving, and just one of those families one envisions when imagining that "perfect family." Simply put, it was such a joy to photograph C and his mom and dad.

This session was suppose to be a "Fall Session." Though it was technically still fall, we don't often think of mid-November as being that fall-ish. However, the weather Gods were with us that day, for it was a beautiful morning with nice, soft lighting. The leaves were still scattered on the ground, and the hues still hinted at Fall.

Mom, I know you are anxious to see these, so I hope I do not disappoint!

Little C loves playing hide and seek!
The W Family - twins! [Toronto Family Photographer]

Almost two years ago, I had the privilege of creating maternity portraits for this lovely mom. Wow, how time goes by. As we can see here, her TWINS are now a year and a half. I went over to their house on a beautiful, bright Friday morning and had a play date with K and J. These two little ones are as energetic as they come. Their personalities were so sparkly, and I hope that from these photographs one can see a glimpse of their little personalities!

A new look for Macy Mills Photography

Change is not always easy. In fact, when one is running a business, change can be downright frightening. "Why change a good thing?" is an often asked rhetorical question, and for many cases, I agree. However, there definitely are times when change is no doubt a positive thing.

I've had my website for a long time, and my logo, for that matter - these components have been with my business since day one, and have become a part of my branding. The truth is, when I hired a designer to put together a logo and site for me way back when, I did not go through a comprehensive branding exercise, which I have since learned is crucial in order to establish a brand that truly reflects what I want my brand to be. What do I want my brand to convey? What is the brand message? So this time around, after doing lots of research, I hired a company, Into the Darkroom, that worked with me on branding, on my blog, and finally, my website.

Branding is much more than getting a logo. I hear that a lot - "I am going to re-brand, so I'll need a new logo." The logo certainly is an important component as a part of your brand package. Having said that, I've learned that it is also important not to continue to change your logo just because you are tired of how it looks. If you choose a logo for your brand, you better be prepared to stick with it for the rest of your business life, unless there are compelling reasons to change it. I gave it a lot of thought before taking the logo-change plunge. On the one hand, I know many people now associate the two intertwined "Ms" as Macy Mills Photography. On the other hand, my logo has only been around for 3 years, so if I want to change it, I need to do so sooner rather than later. The main reason for my branding change is what I mentioned earlier: I never went through a branding exercise. This time around, I took a good, hard look at myself - self-analysis - what I like, what drives me, what inspires me, what styles I like.

With that information, and with the help of my designers, my new logo and the new blog design were born. (Next is my website!) When I look at my new branding concept, I see me. I believe that my new branding reflects what I am about and my style - timeless, classic, elegant, with a modern twist. Because my branding is genuine and authentic, the real me is also easy for people to perceive, which is exactly what I want my branding to achieve. The reason? When clients choose me based on what the real, authentic me is all about, then we've found the right fit! That, in my opinion, is one of the most important considerations when choosing a custom photographer.

Wow, I did not mean for this to become a book. I was just trying to share a bit of why I decided to re-brand. I'd love to hear everyone's comments, so feel free to drop me a line!
